Cape Town will host over 20 major events by the end of this month, ranging from professional sports competitions to cultural festivals. The city’s Events Permit Office has already monitored 20 events in the past weekend alone with highlights including the Cape Town 10s social sports festival, the SA20 cricket match at Newlands and the Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association competition finals, which collectively attracted over 70 000 attendees.
“This month will be another one for the books for the Mother City,” said JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security. “Residents and visitors can explore the full events lineup on our Events Cape Town website.”
Sporting highlights include:
- Cape Town Open (February 8-9, Royal Cape Golf Club): More than 150 professional golfers will compete in the tournament’s 13th edition. Spectator entry is free.
- Betway Premiership (February 6, Athlone Stadium): Cape Town City FC faced Lamontville Golden Arrows as part of the #FreeFootballforAll campaign, which offered free tickets to the first 10 000 fans.
- DHL Stormers vs Vodacom Bulls (February 8, DHL Stadium): A key United Rugby Championship fixture with kickoff at 14h00. Tickets are available via Ticketmaster.
- 99er Cycle Tour (February 8, Durbanville): The 26th edition will see over 3 500 cyclists tackle distances ranging from 45-95km.
Cultural and entertainment events include:
- Maynardville Open Air Festival (February-March, Maynardville): A lineup including Shakespearean theatre, the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra and Cape Town Opera.
- Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts (February 9, Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden): Matthew Mole will perform at this popular outdoor concert series.
