Cape Town Partnership has announced the proposal of a new City Walk route in Cape Town CBD that will take visitors on a historical and cultural journey through the city.
The Cape Town Walk would start at the cultural precinct at the Company Gardens, proceeding down Government Avenue and St George’s Mall and then turning on to the Fan Walk, close to the V&A Waterfront, before ending at the Prestwich Memorial St Andrew’s Square.
The precinct will feature free WiFi and the informative signage will be positioned to help visitors identify sites of interest. The city plans to introduce more public ablutions, experimental street food offerings, permanent as well as temporary public art, and event activations will form a practical aspect to developing the space as a lively destination.
“The development of a curated route or cultural precinct is something that will involve the stakeholders and participants in this story,” says Cape Town Partnership CEO, Bulelwa Makalima-Ngewana. She appealed to the public to work with the partnership to co-create the route. “We envision a team of stakeholders who will be able to engage with us about the narrative of this route. We want it to be authentic, and to include diverse voices and perspectives.”
Sites visited include Iziko Bertram House, Museum, Gallery and Planetarium, the SA Jewish Museum, SA National Library, St George’s Cathedral and the Crypt, as well as the Parliament building.
Public art, includes the General Jan Smuts memorial, Mark O’Donovan’s ‘Man Running from Lion’, Bruce Arnot’s ‘Niminous Beast’ and Brett Murray’s ‘Aids Memorial’ at the Company Gardens Rose Garden, to name a few.
At the intersection of St George’s Mall and Waterkant Street, the route takes a turn along the Fan Walk – a pedestrian route developed in the city’s preparations for the FIFA World Cup in 2010.
The public are encouraged to participate in expanding on this route or adding information to it through the email to citywalk@capetownpartnership.co.za or social media hashtags #CityWalkCT.
