Eight yachts are confirmed to compete in the 1 700 nautical-mile Cape to St Helena Yacht Race, starting on December 28 from Cape Town and finishing in Jamestown, St Helena. The race will conclude with a prize-giving ceremony at Plantation House, the official residence of St Helena’s Governor, on January 10.
The race begins with the traditional Blue Peter party at the Royal Cape Yacht Club (RCYC) on December 23, bringing together participants, family and supporters.
The competing yachts include Tintin, skippered by Di Hutton-Squire, who won the previous race in 2022, as well as Umoya (Pete Martin), Atalanta (Heye Daun and Gerry Hegie), Flica (Rijk Kuttel), Magnus (Evert Groenewald), Fryd (Jarl Spandow), Magic Dragon (Rod Halling) and Mwera (Ashley Verhulp).
David Garrard, Vice Commodore of the RCYC and Chair of the 2024 organising committee, highlighted the race’s longstanding heritage. “Originally called the Governor’s Cup, this epic race represents not just the growth of competitive sailing but also the RCYC’s commitment to fostering world-class sailing events that challenge and inspire our members,” he said.
Matt Joshua, Head of Tourism for St Helena, underscored the island’s role in maritime history. “St Helena has long been a crucial stopping point for Atlantic crossings with a rich maritime heritage dating back centuries. We're thrilled to welcome these competitive sailing teams to our shores and share our unique island culture with them.”
The Cape to St Helena Yacht Race is one of the few international yacht races to finish at a remote island destination. Beyond the race, participants can explore St Helena’s dramatic landscapes, historic sites and local culture.
“The magic of St Helena is undeniable,” added Garrard. “It adds to the allure of the race and has become a bucket-list goal for many sailors.”
