The 2014 Nedbank Tour de Tuli raised R2,5 million for non-profit organisation Children in the Wilderness (CITW), a significant increase on last year’s total of R1,7 million.
The multi-stage mountain bike event, which took place at the beginning of August, covered three countries and 250km over four days and, in the process, created awareness for some of the areas in which CITW operates as well as for the Greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier National Park.
All money raised will go into sustainable education programmes in seven countries in southern Africa through the hosting of more children’s camps at Wilderness Safaris and partner lodges, Eco-Clubs and Eco-Mentor training. Last year, CITW hosted 25 camps for 506 children and 69 Eco-Clubs for 2 575 children.
“We are extremely grateful that tour sponsors and participants have given so generously, not only financially but also in kind. We are very fortunate to have such a loyal support base who believe in the goals of CITW, enabling us to continue exposing children to their wildlife heritage and creating a network of sanctuaries that uplifts and cares for our children and conserves our planet,” said Dr Sue Snyman, CITW Programme Director.
Next year’s event will take place from August 13-18 with registrations opening at the end of November. For more information, email Tour Director, Nicola Harris on nicolah@wilderness.co.za.
