The City of Cape Town has invited members of the public to have their say about its proposed Coastal Management Programme until December 3.
The programme falls in line with the National Environmental Management: Integrated Coastal Management Act (No. 24 of 2008) which requires all coastal municipalities to prepare and adopt a Coastal Management Programme (CMP) for managing the coastal zone.
The City of Cape Town has prepared a draft CMP, found here, with the intent to provide a clear management framework for the coastline and defines the various roles, responsibilities and management approaches as a means to enhance the socio-economic and environmental value of the city’s coastal zone.
The draft CMP has been developed in part to give effect to the Integrated Coastal Management Policy. The City’s Council adopted this policy in September, which is a first for a South African municipality. The policy seeks to mitigate the risks posed by climate change, while simultaneously optimising the socio-economic and environmental potential that the coastline offers to residents of Cape Town.
The CMP, through entrenching a range of management protocols within the city’s daily operations relating to the coast, aims to ensure that city decision-making is integrated and supports a collaborative approach to coastal management across all line departments that have an impact on Cape Town’s coastline.
