South Africa’s Minister of Tourism Patricia de Lille has been appointed to serve as joint Vice Chair of UN Tourism’s Executive Council – the global agency responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism – with Czechia as second Vice Chair. Brazil will chair in 2025.
De Lille’s election comes as South Africa assumes the G20 presidency in 2025.
Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni said this will strengthen South Africa’s role in boosting economic growth for Africa.
Secretary General of De Lille’s GOOD party, Brett Heron, said: “As South Africa takes on global leadership roles, GOOD is optimistic the tourism sector will provide a much-needed boost to the economy.”
The Tourism Business Council of South Africa (TBCSA) extended heartfelt congratulations to De Lille.
“This prestigious appointment is testament not only to Minister De Lille’s exceptional leadership and dedication to advancing sustainable tourism but also to South Africa’s growing influence in shaping the global tourism agenda.
“Her commitment to fostering collaboration and innovation within the industry will enhance South Africa’s voice on the international stage, promoting inclusivity and growth across the global tourism landscape,” said TBCSA Chair Jerry Mabena.
He noted that the TBCSA remains committed to supporting De Lille in this new role.
“We will work alongside her to advance initiatives that strengthen South Africa’s tourism sector, amplify its global standing and foster partnerships that benefit the broader African continent.”
