Air Malawi is looking to partner with Ethiopian Airlines in order to save the airline.
The Malawi government’s Private Public Partnership (PPP) Commission named Ethiopian Airlines as its preferred partner to revive the airline. Should the partnership come into play, Ethiopian Airlines will hold a 49% stake in Air Malawi, while the state will hold 20% and the remaining percentage will be sold to Malawian investors.
After announcing that the airline entered into voluntary liquidation in November 2012, with hopes to continue normal operations, Air Malawi ceased domestic operations in January and operated its last international flight to South Africa in February.
According to Jimmy Lipunga, CEOof the PPP Commission, Ethiopian Airlines scored better than five other interested parties with which the airline had discussions.
A partnership with Ethiopian Airlines will also see Air Malawi connected to 70 international and 17 local destinations.
