Bontsintsi Horse Safaris has launched an immersive horse-riding safari in a 220 000-hectare concession in the northern region of Botswana’s Okavango Delta. Based at Jumbo Junction, the safari offers four-, six-, or eight-night options, with each day featuring morning rides covering extensive distances through floodplains, savannah, islands, and channels, all under the guidance of experienced safari leaders.
The safari is designed for experienced riders due to the fast-paced, long-distance nature of the journey. Safety protocols for wildlife encounters are stringent, with trained horses and guides equipped to manage potentially intense situations. Riders are advised to observe strict safety rules, including staying behind guides and refraining from sudden movements that could provoke wildlife.
Beyond the horseback experience, guests can explore the Delta’s landscape through mokoro (canoe) trips, motorboat excursions, guided nature walks, and night drives. Helicopter tours are available for a bird’s-eye view of the region but are not included in standard packages.
Accommodation spans mobile camps, each with basic en-suite facilities such as an outdoor shower and toilet. At Jumbo Junction, the base camp offers a more established set-up with luxury tents and chalets featuring en-suite bathrooms and amenities, including solar-powered electricity and charging points.
Seasonal considerations are crucial for packing, as Delta winters (April to September) bring cool days and sharp temperature drops at night, while summers (October to March) are marked by intense daytime heat and periodic rainstorms.
Transportation options to Jumbo Junction include air, road, and boat, with charter flights connecting guests from Maun or Kasane to Seronga Airstrip, followed by a 25-minute vehicle transfer to camp.
