The Tourism and Hotels Board (THB) of Malawi will implement a mass-closure campaign across the country for all tourism and hospitality enterprises that do not have their 2023/24 operating licence.
This includes hotels, restaurants, tour operators, car hires, travel agents and event organisers, amongst others.
The THB is mandated by the Tourism and Hotels Act to regulate all tourism and hospitality enterprises in the country.
The closure exercise, starting August 1, will target:
- Enterprises that have failed to meet the minimum standards.
- Enterprises that have not renewed their licences.
- Enterprises that have yet to pay and collect their licences.
“The Board reminds all tourism operators in the country that it is against the laws of Malawi to operate a tourism business without a licence from the Board. The Board further reminds the general public to only patronise tourism facilities that the Board licenses,” Malawi Tourism said in a press release.
