Mega Maldives has confirmed that it will delay the launch of its flights between Malé, Maldives, and Johannesburg to possibly mid-year.
Vernon Nathan, commercial development manager for the airline, told Tourism Update that Mega Maldives was still very keen to operate to South Africa but, unfortunately, the current rand/dollar exchange rate was not making it very attractive for sales to the Maldives, and therefore the airline was taking a wait-and-see approach.
“That said, South Africa has now become an extremely attractive destination, making it very affordable, and therefore we are now reviewing our strategy in this regard,” said Nathan.
In October last year, the airline said it was hoping to launch flights by the end of March in time for the Easter holiday period.
