The scenic drive sets the tone to what awaits at Grootbos. Only an hour and a half from Cape Town International airport via Sir Lowry's Pass and Hermanus, you soon arrive at the lush and forested nature reserve. Two distinct lodges that are well blended into the natural surroundings, become visible as you approach the main gate.

The refreshing fynbos-scented wet towel, a ginger and fruit cocktail given with a warm smile marked the start of a memorable nature escape. Welcome to Grootbos, says Veronique in her pleasant accent.

I occupied suite 31 at Forest Lodge...ultra spacious and modern with exceptional views of the ocean...I was in a happy place.

Being by the seaside, my first meal options would be to try the local seafood for lunch, so I made my choice and ordered the most appetising fish and chips I’ve ever had.

Later that afternoon, I met Anecke, the nature guide at the lodge, who took us on an informative tour at the Cape Nature Reserve where we explored the caves...200 steps below ground level. I could have sat here the entire afternoon; it was the perfect opportunity to reflect and contemplate...and the private beach below makes for a great secluded picnic location. We drove around afterwards trying to spot some whales from the shoreline, but these magnificent mammals were just not in the mood to put on a show for us.

Winding down back at the lodge, I caught the sunset from the suite patio. And what a sight it was. My senses were alert in that moment as I listened to the rushing of the waves towards the shore; took in the fragrance of the fynbos in the air and watched the sun retire for the day. This was pure bliss!

I didn't have the pleasure of meeting the chef but his work was amazing. When it comes to good food, there are no limits at Grootbos! My senses were once again heightened during my dining experience. I think that the cuisine at Grootbos deserves much recognition and many compliments. The comprehensive wine list showcased the best the Overberg region has to offer, making this a truly superb food and wine marriage.

The second day started with a morning whale-watching trip. Less than 15 minutes from the lodge we arrived at the launch site and embarked on the brand-new boat in our orange safety apparel. It was a great day at sea and we managed to get close to some whales, mostly mothers and calves. Camera mode turned to snapshot as I tried to capture as much of the sighting as possible. There was much excitement on the boat, and contentment from those who simply sat and observed this natural spectacle, including seals and a glimpse of a Great White shark.

Socio-economic and environmental responsibility and sustainability form the cornerstones of Grootbos Private Nature Reserve. Guided by Chumani, I visited one of Grootbos’s initiatives – Green Futures – a project aimed at agricultural development and upskilling the local community. This behind-the-scenes experience gave me a glimpse of the significant and remarkable difference the lodge makes to this local community. There is the organic farm operated by a group of women, which produces fresh vegetables and herbs, honey and eggs, the very same produce used to make those delectable meals at the lodges. Other stops included the nursery, which is also maintained by the local community, selling indigenous trees and plants to generate income. There are also facilities where basic hospitality theory and life skills are taught, to transform the lives of the community members for the better.

Chumani also shared his vast knowledge of the indigenous flora in this region, describing how fynbos constitutes fern, protea and erica species. We ventured on the 4x4 jeeps as our guide continued to explain each detail about the colourful blooms and natural wonderland we were immersed in, all the while giving us opportunities to take photographs of the landscape.

My love for horse riding has grown since I was last introduced to these gracious and disciplined animals, so I jumped at the opportunity to join Sam on a stunning horse-back adventure through the reserve. Thanks to Nico (the horse) for an unforgettable and elevated experience.



I ended my Grootbos retreat in the soothing hands of Jocelyn, the therapist at the Spa, who used locally produced oils with fynbos extracts to slip me into tranquillity.

With a number of amazing experiences wrapped into one destination, Grootbos is definitely an experience that is worth every cent! I look forward to my return to this paradise.
