South Africa’s tourism sector is mourning the sudden loss of Destination Africa Marketing Specialist Niel Els – a highly respected industry stalwart with more than 30 years’ experience in hospitality and destination marketing.
Els was a seasoned chef, restaurateur, hotelier, entrepreneur and destination marketer. Between 2010 and 2024, he was Managing Director of Turnberry Boutique Hotel in Oudtshoorn. He was also placed in various leadership roles at Skål International, Unfound Africa, Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, Garden Route Tourism and FAMSA Karoo.
His family announced his passing on social media on February 12.
“It is with deep sadness that we share the sudden passing of our beloved father and friend. Niel was larger than life, touching countless hearts and leaving a lasting impression wherever he went. His kindness, laughter and presence will be profoundly missed by all who knew him.”
Condolences have poured in from hundreds of industry leaders, colleagues and friends. Hospitality association FEDHASA described Els as a true tourism ambassador who had unmatched passion for the industry.
“Niel dedicated his life to uplifting tourism in South Africa, creating lasting relationships and inspiring so many along the way. His absence will be deeply felt but his impact will live on in the industry he loved so much,” the association posted on LinkedIn.
Niels Heckscher, Partner at PFK Hospitality, said: “So incredibly sad to learn of Niel‘s passing. My condolences go to his family, friends and colleagues. He was a true gentleman and professional.”
Valérie Côté from Quebec, Canada, said: “Niel was an exceptional man and he left a strong impression with each person he met. Although he was friendly with everyone, being his friend was a privilege and he will be missed immensely. So long my friend. We’ll be sure to find you on the other side just by following the laughter.”
