Tourism Update readers are resoundingly in favour of a remote work visa, targeted at digital nomads, being introduced in South Africa. In our latest poll, 92% of respondents said a remote work visa policy should be implemented as soon as possible, with only 8% saying that it shouldn’t.
Tourism industry calls for the visa have mounted in recent months, on the back of an expanding and potentially lucrative market for ‘work-from-anywhere’ travellers. In his State of the Nation Address in February this year, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that government was exploring the possibility of introducing the visa. No further updates have been given, to the frustration of a tourism industry that is pushing for all post-pandemic recovery pathways to be opened.
