SAA has said it will comment on some of the matters, i.e. the suspension of CEO Monwabisi Kalawe by the SAA board, “once the Board is ready to issue [a statement]”.
Trouble at the airline continues as SAA’s Chairwoman, Dudu Myeni, last week reportedly suspended the airline’s ceo for unknown reasons.
Minister of Public Enterprises, Lynne Brown, reacted to the suspension by instructing Dudu this week to immediately reinstate Monwabisi. However, Dudu refused to comply with the Minister’s instructions.
How the Minister will deal with the discord at SAA is not yet clear. Collin Cruywagen, Spokesperson for Minister Brown, told Tourism Update: “The Minister requested the Board of SAA to provide her with a written explanation about what has happened between the Board and the CEO. Only on receipt of the report is Minister able to act.”
In an interview with the Sunday Times this week, Minister Brown expressed her frustration with SAA. She was quoted as saying: “SAA can’t [be allowed to] fail. I will fire whoever if further instability is caused within SAA. If anybody creates instability, I will say: ‘I can’t work with you; there’s the door’.”
She was further quoted as saying: "I am conscious that I shouldn’t be involved in the operational functioning of the airline and [should] not, as a politician, give instructions on how the board does its job. But I’m desperate to get the airline working. That accounts for the instruction to the chairman.”
