Steenberg in Cape Town’s Constantia Valley has launched an augmented reality (AR) wine harvesting tour, allowing guests to experience the winemaking process without disrupting operations.
Traditionally, the annual harvest is not open to the public. However, through Steenberg’s new Immersive Harvest Experience, visitors can observe the process using their smart phones. By scanning QR codes along designated vineyard trails, guests can access AR-enhanced videos and images featuring Steenberg’s Winemaker, Elunda Basson, and Farm Manager, Vlok Hanekom, who provide insights into harvesting techniques.
Steenberg’s Marketing Manager Jestine Enslin said this is the first wine farm in South Africa to allow guests to witness the harvest through AR.
AR technology is increasingly used in tourism to enhance visitor experiences. As the majority of travellers carry smart phones, accessibility to AR-based interactions has expanded, making digital content an integral part of real-world exploration.
