Vergelegen Wine Estate’s one-hectare sunflower field has burst into bloom, heralding the start of its annual Sunflower Celebration. The blooms, traditionally associated with warmth and positivity, offer visitors a range of unique experiences – from culinary delights to fresh floral offerings.
The freshly picked sunflowers are available in the estate’s wine tasting room – in bunches of five stems – alongside a special edition of rosé for R150 (€7.68). A portion of the proceeds supports honey bee research and related initiatives on the estate, reflecting Vergelegen’s commitment to sustainability.
Visitors can also enjoy sunflower-inspired dishes at the Stables restaurant, which is offering a small set menu celebrating sunflowers and honey in addition to its regular menu. At the Rose Terrace tea room, Pastry Chef Tarquin Wagemaker has created sunflower-themed cakes to complement the celebration.
The sunflower field, located near the Stables, is a popular spot for selfies and other photos. According to Vergelegen’s horticulturists, Richard Arm and Chris Randlehoff, the sunflowers are expected to remain in bloom for approximately three weeks, depending on weather conditions.
Caroline van Schalkwyk, Vergelegen’s Marketing Manager, encourages visitors to plan their trips early. “The blooms are picked fresh daily but they sell out quickly. Additionally, stocks of seeds and sunflower-inspired products are limited so it’s best to visit sooner rather than later.”
