Although a shortage of cash has prevented the SA National Taxi Council (Santaco) from getting its airline off the ground in the last two years, the association has now announced that it will also venture into the shipping sector.
The latest plan is for the association to launch the airline in the middle of next year. After that it insists it will also enter the shipping sector but it is reported to be struggling to get its hands on the R200 million it needs for the two-aircraft fleet it plans.
Claimed to represent 95% of SA’s taxi industry, Santaco did a PR launch of its venture into the low-cost airline industry with a publicity flight in 2011. But since then a lack of funds has kept its proposed commercial on the ground.
