Truly outstanding golf courses await golfers in South Africa as the country is home to several of the world's finest golf and safari resorts. Beautiful links and parkland courses, often the centrepiece of an exclusive hotel resort, are situated in South Africa's top destinations.
South Africa’s top golfing destination according to Golf Digest:
- Fancourt: This upmarket resort in George on the Garden Route, has a five-star hotel and three courses – Montagu, Outeniqua and The Links. The Links was designed by Gary Player. The International Team and the United States fought out a memorable draw here in the 2003 President’s Cup, with Ernie Els and Tiger Woods deadlocked at all-square in their pivotal singles when fading light brought play to an end. The resort is superbly landscaped on 613 hectares of lush countryside with the majestic Outeniqua Mountains as the perfect backdrop. The Fancourt Hotel has 115 rooms on offer.
- Rated one of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World, The Durban Country Club offers an unrivalled golfing experience, catering for golf enthusiasts and professionals. A combination of lush coastal vegetation, sand dunes and magnificent views of the Indian Ocean make this course one of the most unique, and challenging, in the world. The Club is a fitness hub with world-class sporting and leisure facilities, and is a social retreat and place of entertainment and relaxation for the whole family.
- The Leopard Creek golf course in Mpumalanga takes golfing hazards to the next level, as much of the water is home to the magnificent creatures for which the river is named, crocodiles. Extensive use has been made of water features and sightings of crocodile, hippo, antelope, buffalo and elephant are common, either on the course or in the Kruger Park bordering the course. The 505-metre par-five 13th is one of Leopard Creek’s most memorable holes. Here the green is right on the edge of the Crocodile River but 32 metres above the level of the water, offering magnificent views up the river and into the Kruger Park.
- Humewood: The Port Elizabeth golf course is a genuine seaside links, with wide and undulating fairways, fast greens and thick coastal bush. A round is a must for any golfer visiting the 'Friendly City'.
- Royal Cape: This grand old lady in Cape Town is the oldest golf club in South Africa, founded in 1886. It is an international-class facility, and nine South African Opens have been staged here, a measure of the high esteem in which it is held.
