International tourist arrivals to South Africa steadily crept up towards 65% of pre-pandemic levels in November 2022. The latest Tourism and Migration stats from Stats SA showed that arrivals from abroad numbered 159 771 compared with 247 136 in November 2019, representing a recovery rate of 64.3%.
This is a marginal month-on-month increase from a recovery rate of 63% (when comparing October 2022 with October 2019).
Europe continued to buoy the recovery, accounting for 69.5% of all overseas arrivals in November 2022, compared with a 65.6% share the previous month. Notably, Germany overtook the United States as South Africa’s second-largest international source market, with the UK continuing to account for the highest number of arrivals to the country.
