Despite its potential, rural tourism remains underutilised due to policy fragmentation and limited awareness. Governments often separate tourism, agriculture and rural development, preventing a coordinated growth strategy. According to Jacqui Taylor, Founder of Agritourism Africa, rural tourism is often misunderstood with many reducing it to farm stays rather than recognising its broader scope, which includes activities such as trail running, cultural homestays and culinary experiences.

The global agritourism market, valued at US$8.1 billion in 2024, is projected to grow at 11.9% annually yet, in Africa, agritourism remains largely absent from policy discussions. The sector offers a low-barrier entry for small-scale entrepreneurs, particularly for women and youth, transforming them from job seekers into job creators.
