The V&A Waterfront in Cape Town announced that it has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA), which will see the tourist attraction obtain 70% of its power from wind and solar sources.
The waterfront signed the 10-year PPA with Etana Energy for 43 gigawatt hours (GWh) of renewable energy a year, starting early 2026.
Etana Energy partners with independent power producers (IPPs) nationwide to provide clients with renewable energy solutions via the national grid. Clients pay Etana Energy for the renewable energy they consume, and they pay Eskom or the municipality for the remaining energy consumed, along with a wheeling fee to use the grid.
“This model enables IPPs to build their wind and solar projects where those resources are most abundant,” the company says.
Ninety per cent of the location’s emissions stem from energy purchases, says André Theys, Executive Manager of Operations at the V&A Waterfront.
