A lack of recognition of women’s skill set has been voted by Tourism Update readers (44%) as the biggest barrier for women entering the tourism industry and securing leadership positions.
Gender stereotyping, and a lack of female role models and mentors, came joint second at 23%.
This was followed by discrimination (11%) in fourth place.
Although these challenges still exist, progress has also been made.
Name changes of tourist towns
The Eastern Cape Provincial Geographical Names Committee (ECPGNC) has been holding public hearings in the province to change the names of three towns and one settlement, including the popular tourist destinations of Graaff-Reinet and Nieu-Bethesda, according to Business Tech.
The ECPGNC said the changes were necessary to redress and transform old geographical naming systems.
The committee wants to make the following changes:
- Graaff-Reinet to Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe.
- Adendorp to Kwa Mseki Bishop Limba.
- Aberdeen to Camdeboo.
- Nieu-Bethesda to Kwa Noheleni.
The proposed name changes have been met with strong opposition from the Democratic Alliance, AfriForum and the Graaff-Reinet economic forum.
Tourism Update would like to know how the proposed name changes would affect the marketing and brand identity of these tourist destinations.
