Zulu Rock Lodge in KwaZulu Natal is undergoing upgrades to its rooms and facilities, and a new wedding venue and conference venue are being built, due to be completed by the end of the year.

The existing three-star-graded self-catering units are being upgraded and four new two-sleeper units are being built – one of which will be marketed as a private honeymoon suite set slightly apart from the other units with a private plunge pool and views of the valley.

Zulu Rock Director, Jeffrey van Staden, said: “Although we are looking to modernise the existing accommodation and create a fully catered African-style lodge, the refurbishment will be in keeping with the existing style by utilising local rocks sourced from the area as well as implementing eco-sensitive systems where possible as part of the reserve ethos. The use of local building materials is key to reducing the carbon footprint of the reserve during construction, whilst also ensuring that the design aesthetic complements the natural surroundings. The interiors will draw on local inspiration taken from the surrounding landscape and flora too, with certain pieces of furniture and fittings being produced by artisans using locally sourced materials.”

Refurbishment of all the existing units, including a six-sleeper unit, will see new finishes such as the installation of glass sliding doors and a new kitchen, restaurant, lounge and wheelchair access added to the existing conference facility, and an upgrade to the pool.

The new, modern two-sleeper units that will be set along the ridgeline will have large glass sliding doors to maximise the views.

On completion of the upgrades, Zulu Rock will offer three-star accommodation for 16 guests on a full service basis, with the conference facilities catering for up to 50 guests.
