The Victoria Falls is a unique destination that offers a full complement of adrenaline activities as well as a range of serene experiences, thanks to the unique phenomenon of the Falls, says Robert Hodson, Divisional Operations Manager of Legacy Hotels Group.
Tourism Update asked members of the trade to pick their top activities:
- Devil’s Pool
This hair-raising activity is recommended by Nik Lloyd-Roberts, Spokesperson for Federal Air, and Madeleine Hetem, MD of Tamrich Tours. Lloyd-Robertssays this is a must, although it can only be done at certain times of the year. “This is an epic, heart-racing experience.” Hetem comments: “Our family day trip and dip in the Devil’s Pool on the very edge of the falls in the middle of the mighty Zambezi River’s pristine Livingstone Island left us and our children with shareable, indelible memories.” This experience takes place from the Zambia side.
- The 'Flight of Angels' helicopter flight
This helicopter flight takes its name from the writing of David Livingstone, who described seeing the Victoria Falls for the first time in 1855 as " scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight”. The flights offer views of the Falls and Zambezi River, with the opportunity to see elephants and hippos in and around the river. Helicopter rides are available on both sides of the Falls.
- The Victoria Falls Tram
For those interested in the history of Victoria Falls, Sara Gardiner, family owner of Matetsi Victoria Falls, recommends the old-world tram operated by Pure Africa. “Enjoy this experience with its delicious lunch and historical bridge tour,” she says. Hetem also recommends it. “The steam train offers fabulous on-board dinner excursions that take guests back to yesteryear and the setting certainly conveys an About-in-Africa feel.” The tram is operated from the Zimbabwean side.
- Sunset cruises
Lloyd-Roberts also recommends a sunset cruise. “I did a sunset cruise on the Zambezi Queen, which was exceptional,” he says, adding that the setting sun and the wildlife along the river are “magnificent”. “The sunset whilst on a cruise along the mighty Zambezi is truly memorable,” says Hetem. Sunset cruises are available on both sides of the Falls.
- Adrenaline activities
If adventure and adrenaline are what appeal, then the list of activities is almost endless, from bungee jumping to white-water rafting and even sky-diving, says Gardiner. The bridge swing and micro-lighting are also options.
