DURING Tourism Month this September, Cape Town Routes Unlimited (CTRU) is encouraging Western Cape citizens to travel more locally and in doing so, to be more environmentally aware.
CTRU ceo, Calvyn Gilfellan, said local tourists could help the sustainability of the local tourism industry by reducing their carbon footprint and by travelling more during the low season.
Tourism Month events planned include:
- The launch of the District Six Museum (date to be announced)
- The West Coast Tourism Awards in Darling (September 4)
- World Tourism Day celebrations in Swellendam, Barrydale, Suurbrak and Buffelsjagrivier (September 27)
- The Rapport/CTRU Town of the Year competition (September 7-28)
- Athlone’s Bridgetown High School work project on tourism (September 2-4).
Prizes from Cape Nature are also on offer to those listening to daily environmental tourism tips on Nigel Pearce’s Good Hope FM Breakfast Show.
