A year after Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni performed a ground-breaking ceremony for the expansion and upgrade of Entebbe International Airport, the first phase of the baggage and technical buildings is under way, All Africa reports.
The new baggage-handling system, which will ensure faster transit of passengers, is expected to be completed by mid-September. It will use X-ray monitors to check and isolate bags that may contain dangerous objects.
The ongoing expansion projects at Entebbe airport are being funded through a $200 million (€182 million) loan from the Chinese government.
Other projects in the first phase of the expansion include strengthening of the main runway and taxiways; expansion and strengthening of aircraft parking aprons and rehabilitation of the old runway and taxiways.
The project will be executed in three phases over 20 years with the first phase due for completion by 2023. The whole project is expected to be completed by 2033.
