Sanlam and the University of the Western Cape (UWC) have celebrated the graduation of the inaugural cohort from the Fellows Leadership and Mentoring Programme. This initiative, supported by a R900 000 (€47 223) grant from Sanlam, aims to equip 23 small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) with skills and support for sustainable growth. The programme, operated by UWC’s Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CEI), provides accredited training, leadership coaching and mentorship.
Supporting SMME growth
Participants complete National Qualifications Framework Level 5 courses with training in core business practices and tailored coaching by experienced business leaders. Post-incubation support, offering ongoing guidance to help the businesses remain competitive and resilient, was introduced this year.
“SMMEs are the backbone of South Africa’s economy, driving job creation and long-term prosperity,” said Shadi Chauke, Sanlam Group Executive: Market Development and Sustainability. Chauke emphasised Sanlam’s commitment to empowering communities through financial and business support.
Key contributions to national development
Small businesses are central to South Africa’s National Development Plan, which envisions SMMEs creating 90% of new jobs by 2030. Programmes like this address the urgent need to foster sustainable business growth, contributing to employment and economic progress.
“The Fellows Leadership and Mentoring Programme is a key example of how academia and industry can collaborate to drive sustainable social and economic change,” added Manie Regal, UWC’s Executive Director of Finance.
Spotlight on graduates
The graduating SMMEs represent a wide range of industries with 60% black women-owned and 8% black youth-owned. Some of the exceptional participants include:
- Growbox Nursery (agriculture): Eco-conscious gardening solutions and food security education.
- Eco Gas Technologies (energy): Efficient liquefied petroleum gas appliances and carbon credit rewards.
- IWIFI Techom (technology): Internet connectivity and financial inclusion through mobile banking solutions.
- Likamva Hospitality Services (tourism): Hospitality professional training with focus on technical and leadership skills.
Bellville Entrepreneurship Trading Incubator
In addition, Sanlam and UWC have launched the Entrepreneurship Trading Incubator in Bellville. This facility provides township businesses with affordable trading spaces, mentorship and networking opportunities. Nine businesses, including Silulo Ulutho Technologies and Brown Girl Creations, have been selected as the first cohort.
“The Incubator represents a critical step in breaking down barriers for township businesses,” explained Chauke. “It supports their ability to access broader markets and contribute to economic growth.”
Speaking at the graduation ceremony, Chauke congratulated the participants: “Their journey is about more than their business success. It is about shaping South Africa’s economy and creating sustainable opportunities for others.”
