Zimbabwean hospitality group, Africa Albida Tourism (AAT) recently hosted the 18th annual Victoria Falls Anti-Poaching Unit (VFAPU) Golf Day at Borrowdale Brooke Golf Club on September 21, raising US$30 000.
There was a field of 160 players in 40 teams with Ashleigh Pringle and Michelle Wilson coming out on top. The winners took home a prize of two nights’ accommodation in AAT’s Victoria Falls Safari Suite.
The auction held alongside the tournament raised more than US$2 000, with prizes ranging from return Comair tickets between Victoria Falls and Cape Town and Sean Herbert wildlife images. Sponsors of the event included Fertiliser, Seed and Grain (FSG) who sponsored the salary of a scout for a year, Shades Ahead, who will pay a month’s salary for a scout, as well as Densairy, African Sun, The Stable Winery, Safeguard and Flo3Go.
Ross Kennedy, Chief Executive at AAT said: “The Golf Day showed what an amazing society and nation we live in, with so many generous and caring companies and individuals who support VFAPU year in and out.”
VFAPU employs 17 scouts who have arrested 720 poachers since the unit’s establishment in 1999. The unit works closely with Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority to remove snares and rescue animals injured by poaching and snares.
