Scores of Tsavo East National Park safari camps have been demolished by Athi-Galana-Sabaki River floods in Kenya.
Among them is Tsavo Safari Camp, which was destroyed completely.
Meera Desai, owner of the camp, says: “Tsavo Safari Camp no longer stands. Sadly, it has been entirely destroyed, washed away and flattened by the most violent tsunami-like floods. The Athi-Galana River pushed its way in on April 24 with tremendous force, taking away our oasis in Tsavo East National Park, including all flora and fauna, which formed a part of the family and the daily pleasures at camp.”
Desai further said that the landscape had been disfigured, and the manicured gardens were now submerged under vast volumes of sand.
No loss of life was suffered and all staff at the camp are safe.
Other serious damage recorded in the Tsavo include Galdessa Lodge and Bigi Camp: Doa Doa Camp, Kulalu Camp, Kiboko Camp, Swara Camp, Buffalo Camp and the new Shoroa Camp, which is completely submerged by the waters.
