Kenya’s Ministry of Tourism & Wildlife reports that the US$4.4m Mama Ngina Waterfront project in Mombasa is 90% complete.
Completion was scheduled for the end of June, but it had to be redesigned to include the presidential square, which led to the delays.
Facilities will include a 1000-seat amphitheatre, a cultural centre, five pigeon towers, open-air restaurants and cafés, a fun park and water sports as well as a paved boardwalk at the waterfront.
A new jetty for water taxis and a boat museum will also be constructed near the Likoni Channel crossing. Tourism Cabinet Secretary, Najib Balala, said the government would enter into a private/public partnership to ensure that the park was maintained to a high standard.
Kenya’s President, Uhuru Kenyatta, who commissioned the project in January, said the project would restore Mombasa as a leading tourist destination.
