Okavango Hidden Gems has opened Camp Maru, a 1930s-style safari offering in the Okavango Delta, Botswana’s top wildlife destination.
“The design of Camp Maru is a deliberate return to the authentic safari camps of days gone by and the décor is inspired by the romance of the 1930s safari,” says Bruce Deneys, Head of Marketing and Sales for Okavango Hidden Gems. “With just six luxurious tents, it offers one of the most intimate and exclusive safari experiences available in the Delta.”
The camp is on a private island in a secluded concession in the southern region of the Okavango Delta on a permanent water channel, bordering the Moremi Game Reserve. “We are excited to be one of the few camps offering both land and water activities all year round – game drives, guided bush walks and mokoro trips,” says Deneys.
The camp is shaded by giant leadwood trees on the edge of a lagoon and the permanent water source attracts various animals and birds. The main guest areas include an open-air dining tent, the Map Room which is a comfortable lounge area, a bar, swimming pool and a fire pit − all with views over the lagoon and wetland. The design of the tented bedrooms ensures that the inside temperature is several degrees cooler than outside.
The camp is accessible via helicopter from Maun or by game-viewing vehicle via pole bridges. “Our accessibility by road allows optional land transfers for guests who may be afraid of small aircraft or who have excess luggage,” says Deneys.
Rates for Camp Maru for 2019-2020 are $600pp, $750pp and $1000pp per night for low, mid and high season.
The rates include accommodation, safari activities such as game drives, mokoro and bush walks, all meals, all drinks, laundry, as well as medical helicopter evacuation to Maun.
