A new fly-camping experience has been launched in Zambia’s Lower Zambezi National Park. It is run by Tusk & Mane Safaris, who offers flexible safaris between three fly camps – Tafara Springs in the Rufansa Valley at the foot of the escarpment; and Kutali Island and Buffalo Island, which are tucked away on remote islands in prime game-viewing spots near Jeki airfield.
Tafara is a seasonal bush camp and the base from which the fly camping safaris are run. Kutali Island and Buffalo Island are the fly camping sites.
“The key to selling our experience is to understand that every one of our three locations is very different,” says Luke Evans, who co-founded Tusk & Mane Safaris, together with Kyle Branch.
Evans explains that Kutali Island is a classic Lower Zambezi experience, directly on the Zambezi River edge, underneath winterhorn and Natal mahogany trees.
It is teeming with buffalo and elephant right in front of the camp. “This island is also huge, with diverse vegetation. Guests say it feels like Jurassic Park,” says Evans.
“Tafara Bush Camp, our one permanent camp, is set back 30km from the river on a permanent source of water and offers a wild and remote experience,” adds Evans.
Accommodation is in luxury tents, under the stars, surrounding a campfire. Guests will have the opportunity to view game on foot and in canoes. Game drives, boat cruises and fishing are also on offer. Tusk & Mane recommends that guests stay a minimum of four nights to experience everything on offer.
