We love the effect of the sun shining through the spray of water around the hippo, creating a halo effect.
The hippopotamus is second heaviest mammal – the blue whale being the heaviest – and though its dense body makes it impossible for a hippo to swim, they spend most of their time in the water.
In the evening, hippopotamuses leave the water to feed. As herbivores, they feed on short grass for six hours a night consuming up to 68 kilograms. They may travel several kilometres to reach an adequate grazing area.
