The President Hotel in Cape Town has earned the globally recognised Green Key certification, joining the ranks of the most sustainable hotels in sub-Saharan Africa. Green Key is recognised as the premier standard of excellence in environmental responsibility and sustainable operations within the tourism industry.
The certification is endorsed by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council and the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA).
Green Key certification represents commitment to compliance with the strict criteria set by the Foundation for Environmental Education, underscoring its dedication to sustainable, responsible operations that align with the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
“Congratulations to The President Hotel on this significant achievement. Attaining Green Key certification reflects profound dedication to sustainability, accountability and leadership in responsible tourism. We are proud to have been part of this journey through our Green Key programme, knowing that such achievements drive meaningful change and inspire others to follow,” said WESSA CEO Cindy-Lee Cloete.
An independent third-party audit confirmed the hotel’s alignment with the four pillars of sustainability: sustainable management, environmental impacts, cultural impacts and socio-economic impacts. Key achievements include an established recycling programme that reduces landfill waste, energy-efficient LED lighting and water-efficient fixtures. The hotel has also eliminated single-use plastics, opting for plant-based water bottles and refillable glass bottles in guest rooms and conference spaces.
Guests can enjoy eco-conscious dining options at the property such as SASSI-accredited seafood and a range of vegan and vegetarian dishes at the Botany Café and other outlets. The culinary team, supported by an on-site vegetable garden and micro herb project, takes pride in serving freshly harvested, homegrown ingredients.
Sustainability initiatives at The President Hotel extend to guest participation. The #StayGreen programme encourages guests to conserve resources through an optional linen and towel reuse programme.
“Reaching Green Key status is a milestone made possible by our dedicated team and the support of our shareholders. This recognition reflects our commitment to sustainable hospitality and our mission to serve guests and community responsibly. True sustainability is only achieved when everyone contributes towards this goal,” said Reinard Korf, General Manager of The President Hotel.
Team members undergo comprehensive training and actively promote eco-friendly practices to guests such as recommending scenic walks, the on-site bicycle service and nearby hiking trails.
