Luxury property management company Newmark Hotels & Reserves has added Gorilla Heights Lodge in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park to its African portfolio. The lodge officially opened on November 7, marking Newmark’s re-entry into the gorilla trekking market, having formerly operated in this industry at a Rwandan property.
“Having taken the time to meticulously evaluate opportunities to re-enter the gorilla trekking market, we are incredibly enthusiastic about introducing Gorilla Heights Lodge,” said Neil Markovitz, Founder and CEO of Newmark Hotels & Reserves.
The lodge comprises 15 luxury cottages and is situated at a vantage point with views of the Virunga Mountains and the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest – home to around 20 habituated Mountain gorilla families.
“We look forward to hosting guests in luxury and providing them with access to the breathtaking experiences that the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park presents. It is such a special region in terms of the altitude, its natural beauty and the trekking opportunities, along with other excursions, that await. Consequently, we expect to see massive global demand for visits to this destination,” said Markovitz.
Facilities at the lodge include a spa with steam and sauna facilities, the Humura Restaurant (developed under the guidance of Newmark’s Head Chef Chris Erasmus and Group Sommelier Marlvin Gwese), a bar area and multiple relaxation areas.
Nkuringo, the closest gorilla trekking sector, is a 15-minute walk from the lodge. Nkuringo is home to four gorilla families with a population of 48 individuals. Nearby, the Rushaga trekking sector is home to another 10 gorilla families and, golden monkey trekking can be enjoyed in the Mgahinga sector.
