Tourism Update readers believe South Africa will make the biggest gains in MICE sector development among southern and East African countries in 2025 despite the significant investment countries such as Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya are making in the sector.
More than half of respondents (56%) to our latest poll said South Africa will lead MICE sector development this year. The remainder of votes were split between Kenya (16%), Rwanda (15%), Uganda (5%) and “Other” (7%).
South Africa’s hosting of the G20 Summit and associated events is expected to provide a significant boon to the country’s well-developed MICE sector this year. The Department of International Relations and Cooperation said, in response to a parliamentary question in September, the proposed budget for all the G20 events (including meetings of the G20 Sherpa Track and foreign ministers and the Leader’s Summit) amounted to approximately R497 million (€25.7 million).
Can Durban attract more international visitors?
As reported by Tourism Update today, Durban has made notable gains in its revitalisation efforts – as evidenced by the positive sentiments of local tourism stakeholders and visitors to the city over the festive season.
The coastal city continues to be one of South Africa’s top domestic travel destinations but still has significant ground to cover in catching up with the likes of Cape Town in terms of its appeal to international tourists.
