Recent heavy rains in most parts of the country resulted in the closure of some Kruger National Park (KNP) camps and gravel roads.

Some main roads between Skukuza and Lower Sabie were damaged but the KNP Roads Management team moved swiftly to ensure safety for users including tourists.

South African National Parks (SANParks) said, in a statement, the flooding is largely localised in the south of the Olifants River but all gates are open and operational.

Waterflow forecasts suggest that Sabie and Sand rivers will be inundated with heavy flows for some time. The rain has also been heavy in the north with the Luvuvhu River at its highest level this season.

Roads in the area are also being monitored and road users have been asked to observe road closures.

SANParks said the KNP Disaster Management team was also mobilised to attend to possible emergencies.

“Thus far, no casualties or damage to personal properties have been reported. However, road users are strongly advised to be extra vigilant and cautious when crossing low-level bridges and to not leave their vehicles to remove debris,” said a SANParks spokesperson.

Operators and visitors are urged to contact emergency personnel to assist where possible and are advised to check with their respective rest camp receptions on updated road closures and alternative routes.

The Disaster Management team will periodically provide updated information to enable visitors and tourists to plan their trips accordingly. Those with internet access should look out for the latest online updates on road conditions south of the park.
