Cape Town, the Kruger National Park and Soweto have been celebrated by Brand Africa as the three top destinations ‘that have placed South Africa on the global map’.
Brand Africa – an initiative that seeks to inspire a brand-led African renaissance to drive the continent’s competitiveness and create positive perceptions – presented its 2024 Brand Africa: South Africa rankings in Johannesburg on Tuesday, June 11.
The three top tourist attractions were recognised for their role in positively shaping South Africa’s identity and competitiveness.
Tracy Mkhize, Chairperson of the Cape Town Tourism Board, said the award highlighted the significant influence that Cape Town had on the continent’s tourism landscape.
“This accolade is a testament to our ongoing efforts to showcase our city's unique beauty and vibrant culture. It also highlights the dedication of our team and partners who work tirelessly to ensure Cape Town remains a top choice for global travellers,” she said.
James Vos, Cape Town’s MMC for Economic Growth, added that the city was committed to further supporting the tourism industry.
“We are committed to continuing our efforts to enhance the visitor experience, support local businesses, and ensure the benefits of tourism are felt throughout our communities.”
In a statement, South African National Parks described the accolade as another recognition of the Kruger National Park’s status as one of the world’s best travel destinations.
“SANParks is delighted to have one of the world’s best travel destinations in its stable of properties. At the core of the successful conservation management efforts across SANParks’ national parks is responsible tourism offerings and a deliberate socioeconomic transformation programme that is embedded in community beneficiation. This recognition is seen in many posts and writings from guests on various platforms declaring KNP as one of the best places on earth to visit.”
The Brand Africa rankings are based on comprehensive research conducted in 31 African countries between January and March 2024.
