A new documentary series – Natural Born Runners – showcasing some of the world’s leading eco-tourism destinations through the eyes of South African-born conservationist and ultra-distance runner Paul Gardiner is set to launch at the COP16 summit in Colombia from October 21-November 1.
The six-part series sees Gardiner combining his two passions on a journey across the globe, highlighting eco-conscious travel destinations committed to preserving biodiversity and fostering sustainable tourism.
Destinations include Antarctica, South Africa’s Eastern Cape, Scotland’s Alladale Wilderness Reserve and Virginia in the US.
As part of the series, Gardiner visits Founders Lodge, a safari lodge adjacent to Shamwari Game Reserve, where his father, Adrian Gardiner, pioneered rewilding of the area with predators like lions and rhino. Guests at the lodge experience the biodiversity of the Eastern Cape while supporting ongoing conservation projects in the region.
In Antarctica, Gardiner partners with Ultima Antarctic Expeditions, a sustainable travel operator, in an ultra-marathon across the landscape, highlighting Antarctica’s ecosystem and efforts to protect it.
“Natural Born Runners isn’t just about running,” he says. “It’s about exploring the world’s wildest places, learning about conservation and showcasing how sustainable travel can make a difference.”
Natural Born Runners is positioned to inspire young audiences to explore the world responsibly.
“Today’s travellers are looking for more than just luxury; they want purpose,” adds Gardiner. “Whether it’s staying in an eco-friendly lodge or running through a wilderness reserve, people want to feel their travels are making a difference. That’s what Natural Born Runners is all about: encouraging sustainable travel that supports conservation and protects the natural world.”
