Sun International’s Sun City in North West Province is receiving an R800 million (€52 million) refurbishment, which will be completed at the end of next year. The upgrades to the Sun Vacation Club restaurants, Cabanas and Sun City Hotel are scheduled for completion by next month.
The resort’s four hotels, guest rooms, reception area, entertainment zones and food and beverage offerings will be revamped. The family restaurant, Spur, and Mugg and Bean recently opened in the resort and Ocean Basket will open soon.
The Palace Villa and Salon, the Plume restaurant and the Tusk Bar and Lounge are being refurbished. The Grill Room will be completed by the first week of November.
The Valley of Waves water park recently opened a microbrewery-themed gastro pub, The Brew Monkey, and the fresh fast food eatery, Food Factory. New water rides will also be added.
The Sun City Hotel is being repositioned to provide an ‘always on’, Vegas-style party zone, complete with night clubs, burlesque clubs and restaurants.
An adventure hub, Adrenalin Extreme, will be launched, which offers outdoor activities including Drift Trikes, Hovercrafts, the Human Sling Shot and a quad 4x4 challenge.
A multipurpose facility for hosting lifestyle events, music festivals, product launches and other experiences will be developed in Sun Park.
The 2016 phase of the upgrades will include a new convention centre and developing the entertainment centre as an experiential centre, encompassing arcade games, lazer-tag and ten-pin bowling, as well as a South African Hall of Fame honouring the country’s sportspeople and performing artists.
During the upgrade of the entertainment centre, conferences will be accommodated at the Sun Sky Village, a temporary facility near Sun City’s front entrance car park.
“Sun City is the jewel in the crown of Africa’s largest tourism, leisure and gaming group. It has a special place in the hearts of the millions of people who visit the resort each year. Its reinvention is to ensure that it stays at the cusp of experiential entertainment and leisure experiences. This substantial investment is part of our promise to give our guests a place, and unmatched experiences, to create lasting memories,” said Mike van Vuuren, Managing Executive at Sun City.
