Mike Oliver has been appointed new GM of the new Indaba Lodge Richards Bay, where he will oversee the launch of the Indaba Lodge brand into KwaZulu Natal.
Oliver started his hospitality career as a restaurant manager at The Edward Hotel in Durban and then worked as Assistant Banqueting Manager at the Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town and Banqueting Manager at the Hilton Sandton.

After working as Banqueting and Conventions Manager at Emperors Palace in 1999, Oliver joined the Indaba Group as Assistant General Manager of the new Indaba Hotel, previously known as Karos. He was also instrumental in the success of the Indaba Hotel and Conference Centre.
Oliver left the Indaba Hotel and Conference Centre in 2009 but re-joined the group in 2012 when the Mangwanani Spa was incorporated into the Indaba Group Brand.
Thompsons Holidays has appointed Marie-Louise McDonald as Regional Manager for KwaZulu Natal, effective May 1.
McDonald started out in travel in 1999 as an intern at Sure Protea Travel followed by a stint in the UK and US, which included time in the hospitality field. On returning to South Africa, she joined Thompsons in May 2005 in the Far East department. After a short break for maternity leave McDonald re-joined Thompsons in 2009 and has gained extensive experience as the team leader in the Thompsons Holidays KwaZulu Natal Reservations Department.
Fair Trade Tourism has appointed two new non-executive directors to its Board and a new representative based in Europe.
The new Board members are Kenya sustainable tourism expert, Judith Kepher-Gona and South African tourism industry stalwart, Caleb Mabaso.
“We are delighted to welcome both Judy and Caleb to the Board of Fair Trade Tourism,” said Non-executive Director and Board Member, Lee-Anne Bac. “We believe both will be able to make valuable contributions to the Board and the organisation, bringing with them excellent knowledge, experience and networks.”
Matthias Leisinger has also been appointed Fair Trade Tourism’s EU representative, based in Zurich, Switzerland. With 13 years’ experience in the private sector, Leisinger is a specialist in corporate social responsibility and sustainable tourism.
“We would like to offer Matthias a warm welcome to the Fair Trade Tourism family,” said Fair Trade Tourism MD, Nivashnee Naidoo. “His tourism credentials are impeccable and the wealth of experience he brings is invaluable. We are looking forward to working with him to take Fair Trade Tourism to even greater heights in the European arena.”
