Tanzania is to review its 1999 Tourism Policy to further attract private companies to invest in tourism, especially in the southern part of the country, which boasts a variety of wildlife, beaches, geological features and historic sites.
Until now, the sector has predominantly depended on wildlife, however government and other stakeholders are now proposing an expansion that will include Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) to ensure that visitors also tour attractions in the Lake Victoria zone and the southern circuit, reports The East African.
Devota Mdachi, MD of the Tanzania Tourist Board, told The East African: “Our target is to build meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions tourism for large groups.”
According to Mdachi, the board is working to attract international conferences to Tanzania, banking on the hotels available in Dar es Salaam, Arusha and Zanzibar.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Tourism will be establishing a Tanzania National Convention Bureau to oversee the development.
