The majority of Tourism Update readers believe the UK’s ban on trophy hunting imports won’t have a negative impact on tourism to southern and East Africa.
Approved in the UK’s Parliament on March 17, The Hunting Trophies (Import Prohibition) Bill bans the import into the UK of about 6 000 species of conservation concern, including elephants, lions and giraffes. In response, the high commissions of Namibia, Zambia and Botswana issued a joint statement supporting sustainable hunting and its importance in economic upliftment of communities.
In response to the Tourism Update poll asking whether the ban would have a negative impact on tourism, 58% of readers said no, while 31% said yes. 10% were undecided on the impact of the bill.
