While inbound tourist numbers to South Africa have levelled off as the country enters its traditional low season, the US market is performing strongly, registering a significant month-on-month increase in numbers.
According to the latest figures from Statistics South Africa, arrivals from the US grew from 27 125 in April, to 32 472 in May. This was offset by a drop in numbers from the UK (from 26 850 in April to 17 989 in May).
Overall, overseas arrivals decreased by 18% (from 160 647 to 132 443). The May figures are almost exactly 80% of those recorded in May 2019, prior to the COVID pandemic.
