Several hiking trails in Table Mountain National Park have been temporarily closed due to ongoing fires in Red Hill and Hout Bay. Park authorities have urged visitors to avoid affected areas while firefighting teams work to contain the fires.
The closures include the Kleinplaas, Lewis Gay and Jonkers dam trails.
The Red Hill fire, which started in an informal settlement on February 9, quickly spread due to strong winds. Crews managed to contain the fire initially but flare-ups remain a concern. The estimated burnt area in Red Hill is about 300 hectares. Aerial resources have been deployed to assist ground teams.
Another fire was reported at Sentinel in Hout Bay today (February 11). With persistently strong winds, conditions remain challenging for firefighters throughout ongoing containment efforts. NCC Wildfires and the City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services ground crews have been diverted from Red Hill to assist with containment efforts in Hout Bay.
Park officials are urging the public to stay clear of all closed trails and remain cautious in fire-prone areas. Updates on trail access will be provided as the situation develops.
