Due to the official Kenyan firearms policy, which is under review, guides at & Beyond’s Kichwa Tembo and Bateleur Camp in the Maasai Mara are currently unable to carry firearms as a precautionary safety measure on walking trails outside camp boundaries.
The Mara Hippo and Escarpment Trail guest walk options have therefore been suspended until further notice.
However, the Kichwa Nature Trail is available. This walk is done in the submontane forests surrounding the camps. There’s an abundance of birds, butterflies and plant life on this forest trail, and guests will be able to see red-tailed monkeys in the early mornings and evenings.
This is an included activity at Bateleur Camp, and available for guests at Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp at an additional cost.
Other camps and lodges in Kenya have also had to suspend bush walks to due to the firearms policy, including the Kicheche Camps, but these were resumed in June.
