With just over two months before the start of the FIFA World Cup 2010, all efforts in Cape Town are focused on completing major transport infrastructure projects in time for the event.
Speaking at the tabling of the city’s draft budget for 2010/11, executive mayor, Dan Plato, reported that:
• The new Granger Bay Boulevard has been completed, linking the V&A Waterfront to a new elevated traffic circle on Western Boulevard, with a pedestrian underpass.
• The new Hospital Bend interchange will open by the end of April.
• At the new Koeberg Interchange, the ramp connecting the N1 westbound with the M5 southbound will open at the end of May. All road works along the N1 between the Koeberg Interchange and Sable Road will also be completed by the end of May. • The upgrading and widening of Table Bay Boulevard between Koeberg Interchange and Marine Drive are nearing completion and will be ready in time for the World Cup.
New pedestrian bridges over Buitengracht Street are on schedule for completion before the tournament.
• Contracts for the installation of CCTV monitoring cameras and variable message signs are 90% complete and will be operational during the World Cup.
Work on several bus stations and lanes of the city’s new Integrated Rapid Transit (IRT) system is nearing completion. Stations at the stadium, airport and civic centre will be finished and operational for the World Cup. The stations on the West Coast route are scheduled to open by the end of the year. Some R439m has been earmarked for the IRT system. Buses for the 2010 World Cup Service will be delivered to the city in early April. The city has contracted an operator to run the IRT service.
• R130m is being budgeted for the development of Green Point Common, adjoining the new Cape Town Stadium.
