Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel, in Cape Town has launched two new outdoor dining options: The Fountain by Planet Bar and Saturday Braai. These offerings, conceptualised by Executive Chef Luke Lawrence Barry, reflect the hotel’s ongoing evolution of culinary experiences blending heritage with contemporary flavours.
The Fountain by Planet Bar
This alfresco dining venue offers a relaxed garden setting with a Mediterranean-inspired menu. Dishes include Zuney Wagyu bone marrow, West Coast prawn scampi, Saldanha Bay mussels, house-made charcuterie and artisanal cheeses from local suppliers. Desserts feature items such as pistachio bomboloni and limoncellomisu.
Head Mixologist Jonathan Makonga has curated a cocktail menu to complement the dining experience, featuring drinks such as the Green Goddess and fruit-filled sangria. Ingredients are sourced from local producers, including Farmer Angus and Meuse Farm, as well as the hotel chef’s garden.
Saturday Braai
Paying homage to South African tradition, a weekly braai takes place every Saturday from 12h00 to 15h00 on the hotel’s poolside lawn. The menu includes boerewors rolls, grilled shellfish and local beef cuts accompanied by traditional sides such as samp and beans, potato salad and braai broodjies. Desserts include koeksisters, Cape Malay koesisters and malva pudding bites.
