Secure self-service solutions are reshaping the tourism and hospitality industry, offering guests greater convenience and improving operational efficiency for service providers.
Grahame Saunders, General Manager of Identity Solutions at IT systems integrator NEC XON, notes that biometrics-driven kiosks are central to this shift, enabling guests to manage their own check-ins swiftly and securely.
Frequent travellers, in particular, benefit from bypassing queues at hotel reception desks. The biometric authentication allows guests to check in, verify their identities, and even process payments independently.
Saunders explains: “Frequent travellers want the option to handle things themselves. Kiosks enable them to do just that – swiftly and securely.”
Beyond check-ins, the kiosks can be adapted for various settings, such as airports, where guests can check in to their hotels while waiting for luggage, or tourist sites, allowing visitors to book activities without waiting in line. Keyless entry options, such as smart cards or mobile apps, add further security, enabling guests to access rooms and amenities without physical keys.
However, Saunders stresses that accessibility and data security are essential. Biometric systems can help hotels manage issues like absconding guests and property damage, while encryption and opt-in processes address privacy concerns.
Self-service kiosks can also serve as marketing tools, providing advertising space and upselling opportunities. The integration of these solutions across tourism and hospitality marks a significant step forward, enhancing convenience and security while personalising guest experiences.
“The future of travel and hospitality is about creating seamless, secure, and personalised experiences at every touchpoint,” said Saunders.
