Stricter European Union (EU) regulations on sustainability reporting appear to have not yet prompted tourism businesses in Africa to change or enhance their sustainability initiatives.
As recently reported by Tourism Update, the EU’s newly introduced Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) is expected to have implications for small African travel companies with connections to the European market.
Responding to our latest poll, 82% of readers said the CSRD is not prompting them to make any changes to their sustainability efforts. Just 18% said the regulations are prompting change.
The CSRD requires large and listed companies to report on their sustainability risks and impact with disclosures including smaller companies within their supply chains.
Can SANParks achieve Vision 2040?
South African National Parks (SANParks) last week unveiled its aspirational Vision 2040, which envisages “Mega Living Landscapes” where communities, culture and heritage all work in perfect harmony with conservation.
The vision’s preferred scenario includes the development of SANParks as a leader in international eco- and heritage experience tourism and research and innovation while using indigenous knowledge systems and citizen science in decision-making.
This idealistic vision will require a mammoth effort encompassing widespread organisational change and effective collaboration with all sectors of society.
